The new menu in this Shiquan Jie stalwart proudly displays official government recognition of its services; proof, if it were needed, that this remains the classiest Xinjiang restaurant in town. Even if the new, rather gaudy rainbow-colored wallcoverings don't exactly foster that impression. Either way, they certainly add a novel twist to the traditional Islamic arches seen in similar ethnic eateries. Thankfully little else has changed, including the cheerful waitstaff with their doyly-bordered aprons reminiscent of 1950s Lyons tea-girls. Granted, the cuisine is hardly innovative, comprising rustic staples such as Braised Lamb with Potatoes (32 RMB) and Fried Eggplant (12 RMB). Although the Caramelized Apple and Sesame Seeds (12 RMB) was probably an indulgence too far and should really be listed under the desserts. But whatever its shortcomings (the solitary washroom and cramped surroundings) this particular kitchen isn't content to rely on 'passing trade' to stay in business, an opt ... ...

Business lunch of the month: Sheraton Suzhou Hotel & Towers

When it comes to cutting that all-important lunchtime deal with a prospective client/buyer/partner, there are few places in Suzhou more likely to impress than the Sheraton Towers. The importance this award-winning hotel places on fine dining is evident from the prominent placing of its flagship Garden Brasserie restaurant. It lies at the very heart of the building in an airy atrium that reaches up two floors and gives an overwhelming sense of light and space. Diners can choose from a number of seating areas including a central raised platform that leads out onto to four corner wings (reminiscent of a temple) all enjoying unimpeded views of the classical garden outside and its bonsai-bordered pool. The buffet itself is as close to authentic western-style food as you'll find in the city. (For dishes with a more Chinese flavor, you can try the adjacent Celestial Court, a feature of all of Sheraton's China hotels). The open kitchen has chefs on hand preparing meals from scratch th ... ...

Business Lunch of the Month: Sampan Seafood Restaurant, Gloria Plaza Hotel

When the Gloria Plaza Hotel first set up shop on Ganjiang Dong Lu ten years ago, the hospitality landscape in Suzhou was a very different beast. At the time, the only other star-rated hotel in the whole town was the Sheraton, and foreigners (either tourists or residents) were few and far between. The fact the hotel is still around today - in a market saturated by cut-throat brand names - is largely down to the hard-nosed acumen of this homegrown enterprise. Those skills have been much in demand recently - particularly over the last six months as the industry has struggled to cope with fewer guests, largely down to the Olympics and restrictions on visas. Yet throughout the gloom, the hotel's Sampan Seafood Restaurant, has managed to retain its popularity as a mid-week destination for businessmen and a weekend treat for local families. The food is unmistakably Cantonese, a menu that appeals to most Chinese palates and is, by far, the best known regional cuisine to foreigners. Wher ... ...

The hotel that brought history to life

Garden's five-star rating recognizes its unique role in Suzhou heritage.       The appearance of yet another 5-star hotel in Suzhou is starting to induce a permanent state of déjà vu in all but the most ill-informed of residents. But the latest addition to this exalted ranking, is somewhat different to the legions of international brands who have dotted the city with their identikit properties. The Garden Hotel, stretching 48,000 sq m between Dai Cheng Qiao Road and Shiquan Jie, is possibly the best located accommodation downtown. But it has far more than to recommend it than that. It may have only just won its 5 star status, (after opening exactly one year previously) but its rooms and outbuildings tell a story that mirrors the very history of modern China itself.   The one-time residence of Kuomintang leader Jiang Jieshi (Chiang Kai Shek) it became the permanent home of his second wife, Yao Yecheng and his so ... ...
